Chilapata Forest

In the Dooars, a lush forest called the Chilapata Forest is close to the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. Recently, Chilapata has gained popularity as a tourist attraction. With the approval of the forest department and in the company of an authorized guide, you are permitted to embark on a visit.

Due to the short (15 km) distance, Chilapata is easily accessible from Jaldapara as part of a day sightseeing tour. The “Nalraja Garh,” or fort of the Nal kings, is the main attraction of Chilapata. The fort was constructed in the fifth century during the Gupta era, and even though it is currently in ruins, it is of immense archaeological significance and serves as a reminder of India’s glorious past.

One-horned rhinos, a sizable population of elephants, bison, deer, and leopards, as well as smaller cats like cheetahs, sambars, barking deer, and wild boars, can all be found here.

The principal route for elephants between the Buxa Tiger Reserve (BTR) and Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS) is through the nearby Chilapata forest. It is a really dense forest, and biking or driving a compact car through it is a lovely experience. A 24 km trip through the deep Chilapata forest connects Sonapur Chowpathi with the Gurudwara in Hasimara.

Forest Safari in Chilapata Forest

You can have a guided safari through Chilapata Forest on your trip there to Mendabari Watch Tower and Kodal-Basti Forest. One of the main tourist attractions in the Dooars is the Jeep Safari in the Chilapata Forest. One-horned rhinoceroses are most frequently spotted along the CC line in the afternoons every day. Standing at the CC line watch tower, one may take in the smooth rhinoceros movement. The adjacent Mathura Tea Estate offers tea garden tours as well as cultural encounters with the Rabha Tribal Community.

In Chilapata Forest you can find leopards, elephants, one-horned rhinoceroses, wild pigs, peacocks, and monkeys. Here, you can find more than 20 species of predators and herbivores, more than 175 different bird species, 22 different types of reptiles, and more. This area is undoubtedly a hidden gem for biodiversity. There are still more species in the Chilapata Forest that have not yet been identified.
